Lewis admits that though this “device of diabolical letters” came easily to him as a writer, the series wasn’t one he particularly enjoyed making. “The world into which I had to project myself while I spoke through Screwtape was all dust, grit, thirst, and itch…It almost smothered me before I was done.” He felt there ought to have been a proper counterpoint for the Father Above, such as an angel, offering guidance to counterbalance the onslaught of temptation slung at the poor human. But Lewis didn’t feel that he—or anyone, as a corruptible human—could ever produce such a venerable viewpoint, and gave all proceeds from The Screwtape Letters, along with much of his other writings’ earnings, to charity.
